Evaluation Q4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation Q2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Main Product

Ancillary Text

Typography
In the video our typography is different compared to the ones in the digi pack and poster. The typography even though they are different they are similar in a way because it is simple which made a link between all of them. The type of simple text portrays the band's simple style. The use of this font made it the all whole work because they didn't take the attention off the band making it effective. the typography on the poster and the digipack of the album name is effective because it represents the the whole candy theme in the video.

Star Persona
The combination of our main product (the video) and our ancillary text (the digi pack and poster) is quite effective. In all the products you can denote that we have a clear star persona. The artist's are represented in a similar way where in each product the girls are represented as being dominant females. This is shown through the use of low angles and close ups in the video which was backed up our poster where the shot is a low angle and mid shot where they are looking into the camera.

Mise en scene

Costume
As you can denote the girls costume style is simple which conforms to the genre of our pop rock band but the colours the girls wear (purple, pink, and purple) are all bright colours which links with their genre. They had limited jewellery which is conventional of a pop rock band as the focus is mainly on them and that the accessories. This was represent throughout the posters and digipack.

Lighting
The lighting in both the digipack and poster the lighting is brighter than the video. this is so because the digipack and the poster are there to promote the video so its effective because what the video lacks in lightening in terms of it having s certain flare the digipack pack and poster made up for this.

Props
To conform to our the conventions of a soft rock band we used instruments to show this. The same instrument (guitar) that was used in the main product was also portrayed in the digipack making a link between the two. In the poster the lead singer as the mike in her hand which she used in throughout the video which again portrays the link between the two. This is effective because half of our video is performance based and the digipack and posters also shows this. By making the two performance based when the audience denotes either the poster or digipack they are reminded of the video. It is because of this combination that makes our main product and ancillary texts effective because their is no contrasting context in the two.

The narrative part of our video also conforms to the conventions of of a pop rock video because the props that the actor used such as the candy which were different bright colours linking with the bright colours of what the girls costumes which all links to the type of bright colour represented in pop rock video's which is also used

Colour scheme
Looking at the digi pack and poster there is a clear color theme represented. In the video during the performance our background was red and white candy strips which links with our the lyrics, this is also represented throughout the digipack as we used the red candy strips as a track-list and background. The use of candy colour was also used throughout in the poster with the typography of candy which was linked with the other texts in the digipack making it effective. it is because of the colours we stuck with through the main video and the ancillary texts that makes it effective.

evaluation Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Kim’s

1. Mid shot of her with candy

We have developed the convention of the genre with costume because it is hybrid genre. Her style falls mostly in the pop genre but because of the red and black element to it brings out the rock genre. The white blouse compliment the simplicity of the pop styling and the tie represents the rock styling, which gives it a more edgy look.

Her facial expression we used to challenge the conventions. This subverts conventions because of the comical expression she has on her face where rock usually as a edgy and a more serious expression about it and is more conventional of the pop genre as we played around which is similar to Katy Perry.

2. Gummy Bear

Here Katy Perry California Girl inspired us where she animated the gummy bears, we used this as it represents the pop side to our video. We used to gummy bears who had different colours to represent the colours associated with pop which are usually bright and colourful. The white background was used so we could emphasis the colours of the gummy bears. We developed this shot because we had gummy bears coming out of a phone, which is more experimental. We also used a blackberry phone to link with our young audience where technology is one of the most important aspect of life and how they are increasingly growing interest with blackberry.

3. POV of Yearbook

Conventionally Pop rock videos are usually performance and conceptually based but we added a more narrative element to it as we continually little narration of her obsession, which challenges the convention of Pop rock video. We however used the conventions of pop rock with the coloured candies within the yearbook. We challenged the convention of our a pop rock video in this scene because here we have her looking and in love with the gummy bear and not a boy subverting from the expectation of the audience.

The use of the candies here illustrate the lyrics of Need you Like Candy where music videos usually illustrate the lyrics.

4. Establishing shot of Store

Here we challenged the conventions of a pop rock music video with this location. pop rock video's are usually more elaborate setting where we used a more realistic setting.

5. Shot of the Whole Band

Costume-

We have a clear star persona which links to the genre of music which we are conforming to a typical music video as artist’s star persona usually links with the genre of their music falls in. Our band has a pop style but with a touch of rock styling. Each band member is wearing a different bright colour (Pink, Purple, and Red), which are typical colours that are associated with the Pop genre because they are bright vibrant colours which appeals to the young audience we are targeting. The dark waistcoats and the accessories represent the rock style.

6. Long shot of girl on bed

Here we used the conventions of a music video as we edited to the beat. Here the action is slow to match the pace of the song here and as it got faster the action increases.

General Genre Study

Tarus Riley- She's Royal

This type of video is performance because the artist is shown performing the music and the dancers performing to the beat of the music. The video s performance which is conventional of the genre as they are usually represented through performance and or narrative videos. It is conventional of a reggae video to demonstrate their own version of the skank which goes with the rhythmic style the genre is characterized by. The lyric are simple and repetitive and are about light personal subjects which in this case its about love is typical of the reggae genre.

Cinematography- Mainly closeups and beauty shots on the female which is conventional of the genre because they are used mostly to focus on the artist but in this case it focus on the women because he is talking about her this amplifies the lyrics. Long shots and mid shots are used to portray the performance of the dancers and their different body parts showing the many dance movements. Low angle shots are occasionally used to make the female dominate which is conventionally as it is conventional to make the subject of what you are singing about dominate.

Editing- The scene where they uses black and white editing is unconventional of the genre as the reggae genre is usually vibrant and colourful. The use of slow pace editing which sync with the tempo of the music. The performance also sync's with the slow pace editing and music. The use of the white wash which is quite fast pace to transition between the clips is effective as it links with the fast beat of the song.

Mise en Scene

Costume- Most of the characters in the video mainly wearing simple clothing such as the dress with the different bright colours (Primary colours) which are natural colours red and green is goes with the vibrant theme of the genre. These colours are used on the female which makes them stand out. The artist is also shown in bright colours but only when he is on his own. When he is with the females he wears dull colours so that the focus is on the females not him as he is singing about the females. The females are shown without make up which amplifies his lyrics of them being natural beauty.

Location- The location is a natural and exotic environment which amplifies the lyrics of being natural beauty. Performance element of the artist which was done on the on a yacht which amplify the performance.

Lighting- Most of the video as natural lighting which goes with the natural theme he is emphasising. The lighting are fairly bright which seems to be conventional in most reggae genre.

Props- Tn this video they have used flags colour with red yellow and green which is often associated with the artist's persona of being a rasta in which they believe that they are natural and are in touch the the natural elements which also amplifies his lyrics of being natural. The use of the drums and other musical instrument such as the guitar is typical of the reggae genre.

Past Student Work

The genre of this video is Rock where this video doesn't portray any conventions of a rock video. The video seem to be a narrative video but the narrative is confusing and doesn't really tells a story. I think that the video contradicts the lyrics of the song as there is no relationship between the video and the song.

Editing- the editing techniques aren't good. They used slow pace editing which doesn't synchronise with the tempo of the music which is fairly fast pace. The tempo and tension of the songs builds as it continues where the editing pace remains the same. There is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The scenes with the piano didn't make no sense at all so it was totally unnecessary and should have been edited out.

Cinematography isn't used effectively as in music video they are usually used to represent the artist or band. There is limited use of beauty shots on the artist (close ups), they mostly use long shots which makes there artist less dominating. There is no variety of shots which would suit the lyric and tempo of the song, there isn't much camera movement mainly still shots.

Mise en Scene- The location that is chosen was a good decision however it wasn't used effectively. From what I denote it shows they didn't use the location to the best of their ability. it seems that they have only filmed for a day or two as we can denote the same scene more than once. The use of the piano didn't work as i see no point as to why its there and it doesn't do with the instruments you hear in the song where as they tried to use it to build the tempo which didn't work. The performance scene was just dull and boring there seem to be no passion or emotion.

I would award this with a level 1
